Monday, 9 June 2025: WIDER Development Conference 2025 - Plenary panel discussion titled '(Re)accelerating poverty reduction and the role of welfare policies'. This session featured leading voices in development economics and social protection. The panel will explore innovative strategies for scaling welfare systems to reignite poverty reduction efforts in low- and middle-income countries, focusing on how social protection can address structural inequality, promote inclusion, and foster upward mobility. Moderated by Haroon Bhorat, Professor of Economics at the University of Cape Town, the panel will include Luis Felipe López-Calva from the World Bank, Aruna Roy, Indian social activist and advocate for workers' rights, Guy Standing, economist and author of The Precariat, Claudia Robles from ECLAC, and Deepak Nayyar, Emeritus Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University. |
