Resumen: People in poverty are the most affected by the pandemic because their living conditions and future opportunities are threatened by health and economic shocks. This chapter provides evidence of the association between multidimensional poverty and the rate of infections and deaths from COVID-19 in Santiago, Chile, and examines the role of the social protection systems in confronting this negative relationship. Administrative and survey data from 2020 and 2021 are analyzed using a multivariate method to explore the association between five indicators of poverty and the COVID-19 incidence and mortality rates. The results show that poverty is associated with a higher probability of suffering illness and death because of COVID-19. Although people in poverty are among the population targeted with social assistance, this economic support has not eliminated their higher exposure to COVID-19.
