Resumen: The number of people living in poverty around the world is 0.8 billion, or 1.1 billion, or 1.6 billion. Why do these poverty counts differ so much? This note sets out current levels and trends in global poverty and explains why published headcounts differ. It examines the World Bank s 2025 revision of global monetary poverty and the UNDP–OPHI Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2024 release. This means the poverty estimates use the 2022 population data and thus are estimates for poverty in 2022. Section 2 defines the measures and Section 3 reports levels and trends. Section 4 explains divergence. Section 5 concludes. The note is intended for a broad audience, not a technical one.
