Over the past 30 years, researchers, women’s organizations, governments, and the broader international community have increasingly recognized violence against women as a public health problem and a barrier to economic development. Evidence indicates that violence against women:
• is a leading cause of injury and disability for women in many parts of the world, as well as a risk factor for other physical, mental, sexual,
and reproductive health problems;
• has long-term, intergenerational consequences for the health, development, and well-being of children of women who are abused; and
