Resumen: This report looks at ways to make cities better places to live by increasing our opportunities to connect with other people. Our understanding of the human dimension of cities lags behind understanding of economic and environmental issues. The ‘productive city’ and the ‘green city’ are both further developed in thought and policy than the ‘social city’. Of course economic activity and a clean environment are essential to thriving cities, but cities must also help people to connect with one another The report thus examines how the design and functioning of a city - from transport networks to the availability of parks and sporting grounds to the architecture of public spaces and buildings - can help bring people together or keep them apart.
