In its final report in 2008, the World Health Organization Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) called for a global alliance to build on the momentum, expertise and partnerships generated through its work, and to ensure that the momentum generated is translated into tangible benefits for people around the world. This report provides a basis for hope – it identifies many entry points across different sectors through which improvements in the distribution of power, money and resources, and conditions of daily living can be tackled to improve health equity. As the review of actions across the region of Asia and the Pacific shows, there is indeed a lot happening within countries to address these determinants of health inequities.
